Tigh Bhisa is a high quality restoration and interior redesign of a historic blackhouse, the traditional home for islanders until long into the 20th century. The design of these buildings was very simple - long, narrow and low, with a byre at one end for the animals and a room or two at the other end for people. The fire might have been lit in the middle of the building, possibly without a chimney with the smoke finding a way out through the rafters and staining everything black in the process, hence the name 'blackhouse'.
