The Midsummer & Music... harp tuition workshops were held for ten years from 1997-2007 overlooking Loch Roag in the village of Tolstachaolais. Here they combined a stunningly beautiful location, some excellent food and catering and wonderful musical ceilidhs, and this cocktail of memorable experiences led the workshops to enjoy an enviable reuptation as one of the top international clarsach tuition camps.
Tutors were Alison Kinnaird and Wendy Stewart, two of Scotland's finest exponents of traditional clarsach playing with a dedicated following of harp players and audiences throughout the world. They were assisted by talented harp players drawn from around the world, and who ensured all players, whatever their ability, benefitted from their summer school experience. Alison & Wendy both continue to visit the island on a regular basis, teaching harp to members of the local harp society (Comunn na Clarsaich Roinn Leodhais) which continues to stimulate a rich culture of music.
As well as the tuition workshops, the summer schools have also hosted Christoph Locherbach's harp-making workshop, located in the blackhouse before it was renovated.
Participants to all the workshops travelled from across the world to attend, and return again, creating a global network of friends and musicians.
It is in recognition of this wonderful decade that this archive of photographs remain. As well as this, a book of original tunes inspired by the workshops has been produced. Called "Ten Years for Ten Tunes" and printed with an accompanying CD, it includes the following tunes, all original compositions: Laura Bhissa (composed Alison Kinnaird), Loch Roag (comp. Mairi Macleod), Tolsta Sunrise (comp. Wendy Stewart), Barvais Moor (comp. Wendy Stewart), Gun Mo Leannan (comp. Jo Morrison), Cathy's Cakes (comp. Carole Miller), The Bernera Boat (comp. Alison Kinnaird), Scary Skerries (comp. Mairi Macleod), A' Ceilidh air Laura 's Justin (comp. Jo Morrison), Tolsta Toaster (comp. Andrea Blumberg).
Only a few hard copies of this book is still available (cost £20 including CD and postage), though a PDF version of the tunes alone is available for just £5. |
